Casio DB-520 #1

Released in 1988, this worthy successor to the DB-500/510 superficially disappointed with its smaller screen and plated resin case, but smashed it out of the park in terms of upgraded function. The dot matrix strip across the top of the screen lost its gaps, allowing for text to scroll smoothly across. This was handily exploited by a memo function allowing the entry of a fairly long message which takes place of the day and year if desired. The addition of world time rounded out the feature set. It was reissued in 2009, with the same module number despite the incandescent bulb being replaced with a green LED, and was made in Malaysia instead of Japan. After using a mode, the next press of the mode button brings up the time, which appears with a higher-pitched beep. The world time, alarm, timer and stopwatch modes show the time on the second row, and the 24h timer has a resolution of one minute.
